The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
